Duty-free allowance calculator for India
Add what you're bringing back and see how much of your allowance is left, and a rough duty estimate if you're over.
This is an estimate for planning, not legal or customs advice. Customs decides the final amount at clearance, using its own exchange rates, and allowances and rates can change. Alcohol, tobacco and gold have their own rules and aren't priced here.
How the estimate works
Your allowance first
Everything you bring counts towards one allowance per trip. If the total stays under it, there's nothing to pay.
Duty on the excess only
If you go over, duty applies to the value above your allowance, not the whole total.
One laptop or tablet is exempt
The pricier one doesn't count, whatever it costs. A second one counts towards your allowance.
The rules come from the India duty-free allowance guide, which explains each one in more detail.
Calculator questions
How much duty-free allowance do I get in India?
An Indian resident gets ₹75,000 per trip, and so does an NRI or foreign passport holder with an OCI or PIO card. An NRI or foreign national without one gets ₹25,000. Duty applies only to the value above your allowance.
How is the duty estimated?
The calculator takes the value above your allowance and applies an estimated rate of 38.5% (the 35% baggage rate plus a 10% surcharge on the duty). Customs decides the final amount at clearance, so treat it as a planning figure.
Does a laptop or tablet count towards the allowance?
One laptop or tablet per trip is exempt, whatever it costs, on top of the general allowance. If you bring both, only the pricier one is exempt and the other counts towards your allowance.
What about alcohol, tobacco and gold?
They have their own limits and rules, so this calculator doesn't price them. Check the current rule for each before you travel.
